Health update Spring 2013
Father Greeley is very much enjoying the beautiful Chicago Spring season. He took services for Easter in-home, and reveled in the family celebration – and of course …Opening Day!
“He’s generally in very good spirits,” commented a family member, and “In many ways he’s kind of his old self”. His eyes still have that wonderful blue sparkle, and light up when the family visits…and the Cubs win.
Father Greeley is still interested in technology and spends time every week viewing his e-mails. He has frequent visits from friends and colleagues; and enjoys short excursions around Chicagoland. His family arranges for him to concelebrate Mass in his home on a regular basis.
God Bless Everyone!

Happy Feast Day! Not a bad patron saint for someone who has been a tireless fisher of people. I’m glad to learn that you’re in good spirits, and that you just published your final book. Yet your work continues, for “when I am weak, it is then that I am strong”. So your fishing continues now that you’re stronger, and can bring in nets almost tearing with such a great catch.
With love and prayers,
Dilia
Dear Andy,
I’m not sure how this will find you – I wanted to send a card – but couldn’t find your address.
I just want you to know what you mean to me – from your example of openness – to the great espresso machine you gave us 16 years ago last month…it’s still making great coffee, despite a little crack, which represents of course, the cracks and healings of life and love…
Please say a little prayer for me and mine as I will for you and all of yours…
peace and blessings,
Alfonso
Dear Father Greeley,
Thank you for all of your wonderful works. They are truly treasures. I have been reading your works since the 60s and have appreciated your spiritual guidance through them.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Glad you are in good spirits, have lots of wonderful people around to help you and are able to enjoy the Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks.
God bless you.

Hi – I recently discovered your “Irish” series of novels and have been making my way through… wonderful stuff… to quote songwriter Randy Newman, “I’ve always been crazy ’bout Irish girls…” Anyway, was just checking the site to see what comes after “Irish Cream” and read about your accident… I’ve been struggling with a root canal gone bad for 2+ years and can understand how frustrating it can be. Best wishes, and thank you for all the great stories!
Dear Father Greeley,
Your depiction of large family dynamics, unconditional love and loyalty kept me sane through some very rough years in ly life. I am in awe of your fidelity to Catholicism, warts and all. The warts finally drove me from the fold, but the images from your stories still light my way. God bless you and yours. Thank you for your faith.
I have enjoyed your stories for 20 years. There is a magical mystical quality that reminds us of the power of God. On the other hand there is the day to day love and other emotions that exist in one’s family and community. I will never forget Father Greeley and I will continue to model my life after his–Intellect and Love.
Father Greeley,
I hope you remember me. I wrote the book on Irish Travelers in the U.S. and you wrote the Forward to the book. I met you at a Sociology conference years ago and asked you about your knowledge of the Travelers. You in turn called my publisher and wanted to help. I was so excited to have such a well-known sociologist supporting my work! I pray for you daily in thanksgiving for all you have done for others as a friend, sociologist, and Catholic priest.
God Bless You!

Fr. Greeley;
Simply put, your books changed my life. I was raised Irish Catholic, but it was nothing like what you described in your books. I spent many years resenting the Church. At age 16 I picked up one of your books by chance at the public library. Through your stories I saw that the peace and grace of God was there if we would only just accept it. Thank you for your words and wonderful stories! I wish you well and God bless!

I echo the sentiments of those who commented earlier.
I can state unequivocally that I am a Catholic because of you. I joined the Church at age 24 in 1985. I struggle with my faith from time to time (just re-read “Thy Brother’s Wife” – it helped) but I remain a practical if somewhat unortodox Catholic.
I am godfather to 8 – my two older children graduated from Catholic school – I taught Sunday School for many years. So you have touched so many more lives that just my own.
I could go on and on. Just know that your writings changed my life (and the life of others) for the better.
May God Bless you. Thank you for everything.
Richard
Hi, Father Greeley,
Just writing to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Enjoy the football games and don’t eat too much. I know I won’t.
I am sorry I have been remiss in sending you my poems. I have lost your address and haven’t been in Chicago long enough to drop them off if I could find your address. I have a years worth if you still want them.
Your biggest fan and personal poet laureate (not to prideful am I)

Hi, I’ve recently been re-reading books of yours, some which I’ve had decades. The Jim Fitzpatrick cover of The Magic Cup pulled me in and I haven’t looked back. The ideas and the hopefulness in your books, nonfiction and fiction, have helped get me through some dark times. As a dear friend of mine says, “I wish you love, health, and the energy to enjoy them!” Thanks for sharing so much with the world.
Hey Father Greeley,
Hope you had a nice filling but not over stuffed Thanksgiving. We had snow had our first measurable snow here on Thanksgiving Day. That is late for Minnesota.
I hope you are not too depressed about the Bear’s fall from grace the last few games. Especially losing to the Vikings and Packers. Even though I have lived in Minnesota for 16 years now, I think Steve would divorce me if I every came closed to rooting for anyone but the Bears.
I am just starting to read “Home for Christmas” again. I have read it every Christmas since it came out. It is a part of my holiday tradition like watch has many of the holiday cartoons and movies every year
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Joan
Hello Father Greeley:
I have been reading your books since “The Cardinal Sins” and I have never picked up one of your books without being thoroughly hooked by the end of the first chapter. Being Irish Catholic myself I can totally relate to your characterizations. I particularly love Blackie Ryan and Nuala Anne McGrail. I am in the process of acquiring the entire Nuala Anne Series in Hardback to put into my personal library. Those are books I will reread again and again.
I was distressed to hear about your accident, but I am pleased to hear that you are currently doing as well as can be expected given the situation. Please know that you are in my daily prayers. I am sorry you are unable to continue to write your novels. I, for one, really miss them! They are always so insightful and their message is always positive. Your contributions to the world of fiction are immense and I will miss keeping an eye out for your latest missive.
You are a real treasure and I hope the Catholic Church recognizes what a tremendous contribution you have made through your stories.
Take care of yourself and “Keep the Faith!”
Sincerely,
TKisIrish
